In hosting my UncommonGoods giveaway, I was determined to get my cats in on the action. DETERMINED. I didn’t know how I’d get them to participate, but if there’s a will, there’s a way, dammit.
This was an adventure in learning for us, mostly for Beanie, my black cat, who got swatted across the face by Bitty, my other cat, when he showed too much interest in participating. As it turns out, Bitty wants to be a star and is totally unwilling to share the spotlight with her brother cat, especially when the camera is out.
HOW TO GET YOUR CATS TO PICK A GIVEAWAY WINNER
STEP ONE: Explain to the cats that you need their help selecting a giveaway winner. With cats, it’s important that you explain exactly what is expected so there’s no surprises later.
The cats may appear annoyed, disinterested or alarmed, but they’re cats, so that’s pretty much normal.
STEP TWO: Assign numbers to each giveaway entry in a spreadsheet. Ensure the cats don’t see the spreadsheet so they don’t know who the numbers are associated with, therefore eliminating bias. Write the numbers down on tiny bits of paper, fold repeatedly, allowing the cats to inspect all involved items and to monitor the preparation process.
STEP THREE: Entice the cats by dropping bits of paper in front of their faces.
STEP FOUR: Toss all the little bits of paper at the cats, hoping that they’ll snatch one and you’ll be able to declare a winner.
Keep in mind during this step that cats really like to taste the things they’ve caught, just in case it’s edible.
STEP FIVE: Carefully extract the little bit of paper with a number on it that corresponds to a giveway entry from the jaws or claws of your cat, unfold the tiny bit of paper, see the number 11, consult your spreadsheet, then laugh, because STACEY is the winner and your cat doesn’t even LIKE Stacey.
LATER, allow the cat to squash your curtains as payment for her hard work in helping you.
