Sometimes I look around at my life, and even when it seems like it’s sucking, I realize that I’m really, really lucky. I’ve got a job and a house and two dogs and two cats and a husband who I really like and a handful of friends who lift me up when I’m pouting in the pit I sometimes dig for myself and really, it’s a lot. My life is full, of wonderful people and wonderful pets and safety and security, and then sometimes I feel guilty because really, I have all the things I want, and more than all of the things I need and when you have what you want and what you need, it’s time to give things back.
So one of the things I put on my life list is to give $100 to a different charity every month for a year, and I want 2013 to be that year.
If I’m honest, and I will be, I haven’t volunteered in years. Which is totally unacceptable because I love to volunteer but with a job as hectic and fluid as mine sometimes is, I’ve become ridiculously stingy with my me-time and with a constantly changing schedule it’s sometimes hard to commit to doing, ever, especially when off time has this magical way of turning into work time. This is also the reason why I haven’t signed up for swim lessons or therapy because really, I can’t commit to being in the same place at the same time for consecutive weeks. I’m determined to volunteer AT LEAST once this year, but I want to give monetarily as well, on a bigger scale than I already do, because I can and because if I can’t take or don’t have the time to volunteer more of my time, I need to be doing something more to make the world a better place.
But the thing is I need some help. I’ve got a few charities I love to support regularly and there are a few months throughout the year that I plan to make donations to specific charities in honor of certain events or people who mean a lot to me, like in April, when I plan to donate to a suicide prevention charity in honor of my friend David who took his life nearly 13 years ago, but I need suggestions to fill up the other months, including this one, because I want to spread the love around.
So. What’s your favorite charity or cause? Who do you donate to and why should I donate to them too?
